Wudu (ablution) is not merely a physical cleaning of the body; it is a spiritual preparation for meeting with the Creator. It is the key to Salah (prayer) and a symbol of both the inner and outer purity required of every believer.
What is Wudu?
Wudu is the ritual washing of specific body parts with clean water with the intention (Niyyah) of performing prayer or other acts of worship. Without Wudu, the daily Salah is not valid.
The Obligatory Acts (Fard) of Wudu
According to Islamic jurisprudence (specifically the Hanafi school), there are four essential acts that must be performed for Wudu to be valid:
- Washing the entire face (from the hairline to the chin, and from ear to ear).
- Washing both arms up to and including the elbows.
- Wiping at least one-quarter of the head with wet hands (Masah).
- Washing both feet up to and including the ankles.
The Step-by-Step Sunnah Method
To gain the full reward and follow the example of the Prophet (PBUH), perform Wudu in the following order:
- Niyyah & Bismillah: Start with the intention in your heart and say "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah).
- Wash Hands: Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, making sure water reaches between the fingers.
- Rinse Mouth: Use your right hand to put water into your mouth and rinse it thoroughly three times.
- Clean Nose: Sniff water into your nostrils three times and use your left hand to clear it.
- Wash Face: Wash your entire face three times, from the top of the forehead to the bottom of the chin.
- Wash Arms: Wash your right arm up to the elbow three times, then repeat with the left arm.
- Wipe Head (Masah): With wet hands, wipe your head from front to back. Then use your index fingers to clean the inside of your ears and your thumbs for the back of the ears. Wipe the back of your neck with the back of your hands.
- Wash Feet: Wash your right foot up to the ankle three times, ensuring water reaches between the toes. Repeat with the left foot.
What Nullifies Wudu?
Wudu must be renewed if any of the following occur:
- Natural discharges (using the restroom or passing wind).
- Flowing blood or pus from any part of the body.
- Vomiting (mouthful).
- Falling into a deep sleep (where one is not in control of their senses).
- Loss of consciousness or fainting.
- Loud laughter during a prayer (for adults).
