While the world sleeps and silence covers the earth, there is a moment when the gates of mercy are wide open. The Tahajjud prayer is the most beautiful gift for a believer—a path to inner peace and a solution for the worries that weigh on the heart.
The Timing of Tahajjud
Tahajjud is performed after the Isha prayer and until the appearance of dawn (Fajr prayer). However, the most virtuous time is the last third of the night.
Spiritual Requirement: The word "Tahajjud" literally means "to wake up after sleeping." Therefore, it is Sunnah to sleep for a while first and then wake up in the night to perform this prayer. This effort of waking up makes this act of worship particularly precious to the Creator.
How Many Rakats Should You Pray?
Tahajjud is prayed in units of two Rakats each (performing the salam after every two Rakats). You can pray a minimum of 2 and up to 12 Rakats. The Prophet (PBUH) usually prayed 8 Rakats of Tahajjud and concluded his nightly worship with the Witr prayer.
How to Perform Tahajjud
- Intention (Niyyah): Make the resolve in your heart: "I intend to perform 2 Rakats of Tahajjud prayer for the sake of Allah."
- Execution: It is performed exactly like any other voluntary (Nafilah) prayer or the Sunnah of the Fajr prayer. In each Rakat, recite Surah Al-Fatiha followed by another Surah of your choice.
- Supplication (Dua): After finishing the prayer, remain on your prayer mat and sincerely ask Allah for your needs. Supplications made during this time are rarely rejected.
The Virtue of Night Worship
Those who regularly perform Tahajjud experience an incredible sense of strength during the day. This prayer illuminates the face, gives clarity to the mind, and brings Baraka (blessing) into one's work. It is the moment when the soul frees itself from stress and finds true sanctuary in the closeness of Allah.
